The school itself is located in Bakau, just outside Banjul. The region is the largest conurbation in Gambia, known as Serekunda.
The school currently has 1,250 children (526 Boys and 724 Girls) on the roll; 1,000 attend in the morning and 250 in the afternoon. The school operates on 30 classes of 45 students per class. Several years ago the school was limited in facilities which over the past 5 years a number of voluntary teams have made a commitment to improve.
In recent years a fully stocked library has been built and classrooms have been re-roofed and redecorated along with enough desks for 1000 children to be able to be seated during classes. Fresh water taps and toilet blocks with soakaways have been installed, a sustainable fenced vegetable garden planted and much more. In order to ensure that projects undertaken are maintained a commitment to employ several local staff including a full time gardener and cleaner and assurance that annual water and electricity bills are paid has been made.
There are still many challenges that lie ahead, including the continued refurbishment of classrooms and another toilet block. Following consultation with the local government poultry and veterinary department a 200 chicken poultry business is due to be established in January 2010 in order that the school can self-fund their many small on-going projects.
